Community Languages
Almost one in five young people have a first language other than English in this country and this is reflected in our diverse school community. At Queens’, we are pleased to offer all students entering into Year 10 the opportunity to achieve a GCSE in a wide range of community languages, provided they can demonstrate a high level of proficiency and fluency in each of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

FAQs
Will there be lessons available in these languages?
This opportunity falls outside the school curriculum. It is expected that your child will already have a high degree of proficiency and fluency in all aspects of reading, writing, speaking and listening. There will be some help available when it comes to examination techniques or access to papers.
Will this opportunity impact a students' GCSE options?
Choosing a community language does not make your child exempt from taking either French or Spanish in year 10. This is an additional language opportunity (extra-curricular).
When does my child sit the examinations?
Students are expected to sit the examination in the summer of Year 10.
As this is an additional opportunity, is there a cost?
There is a cost associated with this additional opportunity. The cost covers the examination entry and invigilation costs. If you are in receipt of the pupil premium, the school will cover these costs.
My child is attending a language school. Can they sit the language examination at Queens’?
Yes, provided the language is listed above. If you have a tutor who is also able to conduct the speaking component, this is also possible, provided that the relevant JCQ regulations are met.
